We could even leave tonight You could paint and I could write Somewhere so far away From our places in this life We could even leave tonight We could even leave tonight You could paint and I could write We could even change our names Coloured contacts in our eyes There must be a midnight train Or an early morning flight We could even leave today We could even leave today You could write and I could paint In a city full of strangers We could live on bread and wine Coffee in some small café and Plotting out the storyline We could shack up out of sight We could shack up out of sight You could paint and I could write

about

Leave Tonight Thoughts
We were writing remotely for the first time in our lives when in Lockdown and after everything opened up again it was still fun to receive some music recorded by Ryda on a Friday night and I would spend the weekend trying to see how I could add vocals and lyrics and melody and all that jazz. Sometimes the tunes felt impenetrable – I didn’t know what he was doing and where any patterns or circles were in the three- or four-minute pieces. Ryda’s constructions are like amazing puzzles to try and unlock or something. And it was the Saturday night on the couch listening through my headphones that the patterns and circles came to me – I could run a series of rhyming lines here and then have a lyrical hook to wrap up each little grouping (were the verses or choruses? – we don’t always operate that way) anyway a simple story came out to place on top of Ryda’s beautiful little mystery.
What’s it all about? There is no groundbreaking theme here but the romantic idea of actually mixing a new romance that is somehow forbidden or going to upend the universe with the idea of “let’s quit our grey boring jobs and lives and follow our creative instincts” is the concept. Running away from the accountancy firm of the soul with someone in the same kind of cage and becoming strangers in a city. And making art for the rest of your lives! A big upheaval done in a gentle and small way. It is a little fantasy and a little sad and gentle. Because I don’t think they go through with it. But that’s just my interpretation.
Garth Horsefield mixed the track and remixed an alternative version, putting his fresh ideas and sounds to it. We have known and loved Garth for a lifetime and it was awesome to go from our grey little whisper to his big blue sky remix – best of both worlds – two different takes on the one escape fantasy.
